A Statement of Purpose that is 1-2 pages in length is required. This statement is a forward-looking document about why you would like attend UCSC and will be assessed using the following criteria:

Please identify and discuss specific research areas or themes that align with your overall motivation to pursue a PhD at UCSC in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Please describe 3-5 active research faculty members* whose research interests align with your stated interests and career goals. We will utilize this information to help identify faculty you could interview as well as identifying thematic areas of interest we are looking to grow that academic year.

Please clearly articulate your motivations for pursuing graduate education and how it aligns with your aspirations for the future.

​*Please note, emeritus faculty, teaching faculty, and lecturers do not serve as research supervisors for incoming students. We do not have a PhD program in Chemical Education.

A Personal History statement that is 1-2 pages in length is required. This statement will be assessed using a combination of the following criteria that is appropriate for each individual applicant. We appreciate that each potential student has a unique path towards achieving their education goals:

Please describe your prior research experience(s) including the importance of the research and your role in carrying out experiments that supported a hypothesis or research objectives.

Identifying research publications, presentations, or conference proceedings that were a direct result of your participation in prior research is encouraged.

Take the opportunity to describe any potential obstacles you encountered on your research path, and/or in the research lab itself, and how you overcame those obstacles to accomplish your research goals. This may include providing context into how you grew as a scientist or what you learned about yourself from these experiences.
